HEALING COLLECTIVE TRAUMAS TO FOSTER SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION IN KENYA

Routledge International Handbook of Trauma-Responsive Peacebuilding

[2026]

This chapter examines Green String Network's Kumekucha Quest Programme; how it integrates trauma healing with peacebuilding by addressing adverse childhood, community, climate, and cultural experiences; and how its innovative approach is demonstrably effective in improving participants' knowledge, wellbeing, and futures. Ultimately, it frames how the programme transforms young people from victims of historical trauma into agents of positive change in their communities, and why this healing-centred peacebuilding approach provides a scalable model for sustainable peace in Kenya and other post-colonial, conflict-affected settings.

UNDERGRADUATE DISSERTATION

Age of Criminal Responsibility, Youth Justice Systems, and the Welfarism-Punitivism dichotomy form three fundamental pillars to the multitude of factors that make up a country’s responses to offending and delinquency by children and youth. Their individual salience in matters of youth justice is unequivocally clear, but less so is the relationship between them. In recognising this, my 12,000-word First Class dissertation aimed to explore the exact nature of these relationships as well as investigate each individual pillar.

SUMMER  RESEARCH   INTERNSHIP

Upon realising that there is little recognition of the phenomenon of parental incarceration in terms of its effect on the parent, this research sought to address this. It does so regarding how these parents navigate parenting from prison, and in particular looks into the measures in place to support this. For it, I gathered and analysed large amounts of literature and data, compiling all findings and recommendations in a 14,000-word comparative policy review.

Keynote Speech

Co-presented a Keynote Speech entitled ‘Imagination Unlocked: Story, Culture, and Healing as Engines of Africa’s Future’ with Dr. Steven Lichty. As one of three keynotes, this speech spoke to the conference theme of imagination, reframing it as a practical capability that can be taught and scaled, and showcasing African initiatives like Kumekucha Quest where story-led, trauma-informed practice improves real outcomes and drives creative and imaginative approaches for social transformation.

Wisdom does not show itself so much in precept as in life - in firmness of mind and a mastery of appetite. It teaches us to do as well as to talk; and to make our words and actions all of a colour.
